“Recently stumbled upon this photo of @clubmaiteee , printed on a stack of postcards from when her guest editor issue came out with SOLOskatemag a few years ago.
It was shot somewhere along the coast of Portugal on a camping trip with little to no plan or orientation, which is why I can’t remember if we got tipped off about the spot or just happened upon it. Let’s say we discovered it by chance because we may as well have.
The photo is probably one of my favorites I’ve ever shot, and that is only partially due to my obsession with old school telephone poles and powerlines and the fact that something about the scenery reminds me of suburbs in Japan (where I’ve never been but desperately need to go). I’m also a huge fan of the natural sunlight coming in at a low angle from the left, illuminating her hair and casting the shadow of the fence on her shoulder. What I love most about the photo is the energy Maité brings to all her tricks, and how her skating looks captured in a still frame: her fingertips loosely keeping check of the wall, her knees tucked all the way to the chest, front foot extended guiding the board by its edge while the back foot is firmly planted on the perfectly level board. I think the loose trucks and surfy style can sometimes mask that level of execution, tweak, and extension that goes into every Maité move, but it really always comes out in a still frame.
I just recently had the chance to gather more evidence of that theory on our trip for the inaugural issue of @bubbleskatemag , visiting Maité in Marseille. Always a good time ♥️ “
